The Rural Development Section implements measures of the (common) agricultural policy intended for development and planning of rural areas, reconstruction of villages, improvement of agricultural land structure, restructuring and reconstruction of farms and food-processing industry. Between 2002 and 30 April 2004, the Section implemented the SAPARD programme. Following the EU accession, the Section has undertaken seven measures of the Single Programming Document RS 2004-2006 (SPD) in the field of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, while also implementing national measures.

TASKS AND OPERATION

The Section implements the following groups of measures:

a) SAPARD (2002-2004)

• Investments in agricultural holdings
• Economic diversification on farms
• Investments in marketing of agricultural and fishery products
• Development and improvement of infrastructure in rural areas

• Improvement of processing and marketing of agricultural products
• Investments in agricultural holdings
• Diversification of agricultural activities and activities close to agriculture - alternative income sources
• Investments in forests for improvement of economic and ecological value of forests
• Marketing of quality agricultural and food products
• Modernisation of existing vessels and small scale coastal fishing
• Aquaculture, processing and marketing
• Beekeeping

c) National rural development measures

• Land consolidations and restoration of unfinished land consolidations
• Support for the recovery of damage caused by natural disasters and exceptional occurrences
• Support to young transferees of farms
• Support to professional events, peer and interest association

• Axis 1: Improving the competitiveness of the agricultural and forestry sector
• Axis 3: Quality of life in the countryside and diversification or rural economy
